Intuitive Scanning

Human intuition is called the sixth sense, and I think that's a very apt description.  Intuition can allow us to feel and sense energies of any kind.  This is very important when dealing with other realms of being.  All nonphysical beings have a vibe, just like all human beings have a vibe.  This vibe can change to some extent day-to-day and can transform through the process of growth and evolution.  Anytime we talk with another person we automatically suss out their vibe by listening to their tone of voice, reading their body language, looking at their facial expressions, and gauging the meaning behind their words.
When interacting with nonphysical beings from other realms or planes of existence, we do not have our usual five senses at our disposal for sussing out vibes.  But we can utilize our intuitive senses to pick up information that will help us make an informed decision about the being's intentions.  Every being is composed of layers of energy, and different layers can have feelings or vibes.  At the center of every sentient being is either a physical heart or heart energies, which when read can reveal if they have your highest and best interests at heart.
There was a time in my development as an energy work practitioner that I resisted intuitively scanning and reading nonphysical beings.  I was a little naive and trusting and figured it was unlikely someone would go to all the trouble to try to trick me or manipulate me in some way.  You can guess what happened next - life gave me a nice little wakeup call.  I learned to as a rule intuitively scan any and every being with whom I interacted.  And scanning the surface layer was simply not enough to provide accurate information about a being's intentions.
So, let's say you're interacting with a spirit.  This nonphysical being presents as the ghost of a person who died not that long ago, looking for some help in crossing over.  Before engaging further, I would recommend intuitively scanning their heart energies to see if they are honest in their presentation, or if you can sense a duplicitous nature and intent emanating from the core of their being.   You may be concerned about offending or upsetting them, but if they are honest and pure in their intentions, scanning will not bother them.  This is actually one of the most telltale signs that a being has ulterior motives - if they resist being scanned, it's time to shut the door to them and send them on their way.
Effective intuitive scans require four things: belief in yourself that it's possible for you to do this, a softening and an opening of the third eye and crown chakra, focused intention on the task at hand, and a communicator.  If you fall short on number 1 or 2, you may want to meet with an intuitive practitioner who can guide you in your development and help bolster your belief.  Number 3 is a skill you can develop by practicing lasering in with your intuition to read very specific energies.  Number 4 may be the most fun, because you get to develop a partnership with a friend on the other side who will help you in all of your intuitive endeavors.
Once you have a suitable communicator (if you're not sure if you do, ask Source to send you the right being for the job), a softness in your third eye and crown chakra, belief in yourself or at least a willingness to try, and readiness to focus your awareness very precisely, you can begin practicing intuitive scans.  I recommend starting out with something easy and physical, like a plant.  Plants have heart energies that can be read relatively easily.  You could also try a tree or a bush.
As you start to feel more comfortable scanning flora with your intuition, try a little fauna.  Perhaps try scanning a squirrel, a chipmunk, or even the neighborhood dog.  Maybe stay away from cats for the moment though - they are very advanced intuitively and can easily block your newbie attempts to scan them.  Don't forget to have fun!  Developing your intuition can be a total blast if you do it safely.  It's a big world out there, so take your time.  Happy exploring :).
